I was as surprised as you must been when hearing that the EU Commission actually wants to do the right thing regarding this cookie consent madness.
To my own suprise I initially had to think about those businesses that grew and made an entire new industry of managing website user consent. They’ve become the experts over managing how and what data websites may or may not use, all in alignment with a very complicated legislation.
Whilst it is fair to regulate technology with the users’ best interest in mind, it also beared some grain of patronising with it. How grown up are people indeed when handling their online presence? And with it, when sometimes dealing with sensitive data, like credit card number, is there enough maturity? Or – are people really aware of the risk of experiencing identity theft, and how bad that can be?
No, to my opinion, they are not. And that’s why it takes more explaining and educating, in addition to effective legislative protection, especially for children. Just as they have tried to do with these cookie consents.
But what do cookies have to do with identity theft? Or any other serious online threats?
Nothing – is the short answer.
Imho, the EU Commission went with a tank to a knife fight. And now realised it and try to fix it. Kudos for that.
But think what risks you’ve put countless number of people in that built an industry around those cookie consents and are now potentially facing the abyss.
Not cool.
